Catto Vanessa Houghton is an abstract painter whose complex compositions employ graphic shards of colour to create dynamic, vibrant geometries inspired by various traditions in architecture, design and visual art. Her paintings reference the patterning found in Op Art, the immersive qualities of Colour Field painting, as well as nodding to Art Nouveau, Art Deco and craft traditions. Her palette is drawn from culturally and geographically specific color schemes experienced through her extensive travels in Asia, the South East, the Middle East, Europe and the Caribbean. Catto also credits her exposure to Hip-Hop culture, Japanese contemporary art, Islamic Architecture and Minimalism as having been strong influences on her aesthetic sensibility. Her works are created on stained and varnished wood panels, whose natural wood grain provide an organic contrast to her graphic compositions.
